Banjo Has Pus

When we talk about animals with injuries, not everything is visible to the naked eye, so we often have to judge the animal’s condition according to the behavior.

Of course, each case should be analyzed separately by a person who knows the behavior of the species. In order to make an adequate assessment, it is taken into account: in which season things happened, what was the time of day, at what time of day the animal was found, and under what circumstances, behavior, age, appearance (size, nutrition, spike density, snot, blood), whether there was an accumulation of flies around it, and / or eggs or larvae of flies on the body.

Each time you call us, the person on duty on the phone will ask you about some of these things and we will want pictures of the animal with a subject next to it, for scale. Then we add in the information about the season and the weather, and the computer in my brain assembles the picture to decide if the animal should be taken for treatment or something else. Sometimes people are outraged that we question them in such detail and ask for pictures, but it is not right to take animals from their natural habitat without a real reason.

Even if the animal looks healthy, the unusual behavior tells us that there is a problem, and when we talk about hedgehogs, their appearance during the day is an indication of a problem, because hedgehogs are nocturnal animals.

Bandzho looks very good in appearance - a well-fed large male hedgehog with shiny spikes. However, he has been spotted roaming in the light of day, and at a time when the healthy large hedgehogs are hibernating. This behavior is an indication of a problem. And here is the problem, which becomes visible only when experienced people examine the body, because the cause is hidden under the chin and is not visible at all - a wound that has closed on top, but has collected a lot of pus inside.

Such festering wounds sometimes take months of daily treatment to clear and close completely, and when they are on the head, if they cover the teeth and eyes, the situation becomes dangerous.
