Wild news < BACK
You know that we give you regular updates about the irregularities around the existence of mink farms in Bulgaria, and the threat these farms represent to our country’s nature. In all of the countries that have mink farms, even in the ones with strict rules and regulations, animals escape from the farms. This represents a threat to the environment because of the fact that the minks destroy large amounts of smaller animals from the local fauna. In many of the countries that have mink farms, this has already turned into an environmental catastrophe, for which the local authorities are trying to find a solution.
Meanwhile, the Bulgarian mink farmers are denying the existence of this problem, despite of the fact that they’re not obeying the strict rules for securing the cages and preventing the minks from escaping. Such rules are being applied in all of the other countries.
The farmers deny, although it is an everyday thing and a common practice amongst the local villages people to return the minks who have escaped, in exchange for money.
During our visits to the village of Madzerito, where one of the big mink farms lies, we have repeatedly founded traces near the water basin – an absolute proof that there is a number of minks living in the wild, who have escaped from the farm. A lot of times we have seen corpses of killed minks in the village yards – they have either killed or injured some of the farm animals and the locals have taken the problem into their own hands.
After all of the traces and corpses we’ve seen, here is the live example of the problem – a young American mink, captured in one of the yards in the village. On the 15th of September, we received a signal and responded to it immediately. A signal has been sent also to the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters in Stara Zagora.
The animal is in a bad health, with wounds on her legs. A treatment has already started.
We called the mink Hope. If she manages to recover from her health problems and to survive, unlike the other 120 000 animals at the Madzerito farm, she will continue to live post the month of November, when it’s the animals’ skinning season at the farms.
Thank you, Veterinary clinic “Blue Cross”, for the quick late night reaction, and the huge help with this case!
