A Montpellier snake, one of the rare species in our lands, a victim of a yard dog. A lot of perforations on the body, and a spinal fracture. We could not help the snake.
Unfortunately, a large number of snakes fall victim to yard dogs and cats. This is not natural selection - as a lot of pet owners try to justify it. Domesticated cats and dogs are not a part of wildlife, and their increasing numbers are a threat to wild animals. This is not just a normal event in nature - nature does not exterminate on such a massive scale.
Snakes crawl in yards easily through fences, and having a snake in the yard is more of a gift than a curse. Every snake would do everything possible to avoid contact with humans, dogs or cats. At the same time, snakes are the only proven and secure way to regulate rodent numbers.
Snakes fall victims in a very pointless fashion - they don't even get eaten after they’re killed.
Keep in mind that your yard is a habitat for countless wild animals, and there is no way that you can create a sterile environment without any wildlife. The ideal situation would be to accept wildlife and live in harmony with all the creatures that surround you. You are the conscious creature, capable of thought, that can determine and find creative ways to coexist. You need to consider and put into practice ways to protect your pets without killing all other animals. Do not let the hoe lead you on this path - but observe, study, reason and live with tolerance for the wild and its natural inhabitants.
