Our weather forecast is: "Expect unspeakable weather with widespread heavy squirrel showers".
The high winds of the last 2 days have literally shaken the squirrel world to its foundations. Many squirrels have lost their nests with their young in them, when branches and entire trees housing the squirrel nests fell.
In our case, we receive nest after nest, and some of the young have severe injuries after falling from high up. It's a good thing the nests are soft, so they still protect the babies somewhat. On the ground, however, the cats are the first to reach them.
Take a good look at the areas around fallen trees and bushes. If you find young ones, tuck them into a small box.
If they've fallen with the whole nest, take them directly with the nest. If they are single kits, find something soft and warm to put inside as quickly as you can. There should be no loose strings. You might also be able to put a bottle of mineral water lying down with plenty of warm water in it, tucked into a thick sock to keep the babies warm. The bottle should be secured so that it doesn't roll around and trap the little squirrel or squash it.
Bring the animal quickly, don't keep it. Treatment should start as soon as possible.
